Martin Ward GGSM | MMus (with Distinction) : Composition | Music Services

Martin Ward is an award-winning composer of music for opera, theatre, dance and the concert stage. Much of his work involves itself with musical storytelling and character-setting and for this he draws influences from a wide range of styles and genres. This flexible, story-led approach enables him to create memorable characters and effective moments of drama across his stage works and has garnered him praise from critics, audiences and awards alike, most notably for The Wind in the Willows (which won an Olivier Award in 2014), Pinocchio and Faeries for the Royal Opera House; The Canterville Ghost  for the English National Ballet; the self-penned They Came Back (for which he won the 2015 Flourish Opera Award); the Edinburgh Fringe First nominated opera Dr Quimpugh's Compendium of Peculiar Afflictions; family shows such as Peter Pan (Off-West End Award in 2015) and Skitterbang Island, both for the Polka Theatre; and, in 2017, the ground-breaking 12-episode podcast opera Road Memoir.

Martin has also worked extensively as an arranger and orchestrator, in music preparation and as a key music staff member for arts organisations as renowned as the Royal Opera House and the BBC. He now combines his creative talents with this in-depth professional knowledge and experience to offer Martin Ward Music Services, a one-stop shop for a full range of music services from arranging, orchestrating and copying, to transcription, demo and backing track recording and production and librarian services, and creative assisting, project consulting and management.

"I sat in utter awe of Martin Ward's music which is a dream. The detail within the score is phenomenal. I would happily listen to the music for the rest of time." for The Wind in the Willows, West End Frame, December 2013

"...a soaring collection of songs, composed by the supremely talented Martin Ward... ***** " for Dr Quimpugh, The Scotsman, August 2012

"...with superb music by Martin Ward and a sparkling libretto by Phil Porter it is a delightfully quirky, humorous and touching piece of musical theatre..." for Dr Quimpugh, Sunday Herald, August 2012

"If you thought that opera was only for grown-ups, think again. Phil Porter and Martin Ward combine music, singing and puppetry with an engaging, junkshop aesthetic to terrific effect... the piece has genuine emotional muscle, underlined by a score that is musically playful, and which slyly slips in every operatic convention, from arias to trios." for Skitterbang Island, The Guardian, July 2010
